brick & flint house

A new build in the Surrey Hills crafted from beautiful natural materials and with generous proportion.

Starting from scratch

Brick and Flint House was designed collaboratively with the clients and the wider client team. The clients had given up hope in their search for a Georgian house in the region, so instead opted to build something that would meet the needs of their family of five, but with a nod to a house with history, classical proportion and scale.

Emma Milne Interiors were appointed by the clients as interior architects to advise on the internal layout, the materiality of the build inside and out, architectural details, and all of the joinery. We also developed the interior design to include the colour schemes and elements of the soft furnishings.

elevating the ordinary

Brick & Flint House has at its core the proportion, symmetry and elegance associated with classical Georgian architecture, but made relevant for a more modern way of living. Giving over more of the available space to the general living areas, and a focus on flow and movement around the house as a whole. The combination of refined brick contrasts with the more rustic aesthetic of the flint, which brings a softer more approachable feel to this country house which sits beautifully in its landscape.

Focusing on maximising ceiling heights, giving over generous space for the central and connecting hallways, the inclusion of timber paneling in the most sociable spaces, means the house has a quiet understated grandeur. The result is a house filled with light, stunning views from every aspect, and a wonderfully balanced home for modern living.

“Emma and her brilliant team made an invaluable contribution to the highly complex and challenging process of building a house from scratch. She not only understood our vision but helped shape it, and was on board even before we appointed architects. Her team were involved at every stage and developed an elegant and calm interior with recommendations that were beautiful and practical. The house is a pleasure to live in, and Emma continues to help us develop and evolve our home.”
